The short version
A demolition robot is a compact, tracked carrier with a hydraulic arm and a quick-change tool, driven by an operator standing nearby with a remote control. It is not autonomous; a skilled person controls every movement. The “robot” part is simply that the person isn’t sitting on it. The best-known machines come from Swedish manufacturers, and the category is sometimes called “Brokk-type” machines after the most established brand.
The parts
Carrier and tracks
The base is a tracked chassis, usually between one and five tonnes depending on the model, narrow enough to pass through a standard doorway (our machines clear 780 mm) and able to climb stairs, drive up ramps around 30° and ride a passenger or goods lift. Being tracked means it works on rubble, slabs, decks and slopes.
Outriggers
Four hydraulic outriggers extend from the chassis to give a wide, stable base while breaking. This is what lets a light machine swing a heavy breaker without tipping. They lift, so the machine stays narrow for travel.
Three-section arm
The arm is the distinctive feature. Instead of the two-piece boom of an excavator, it has three sections, which gives it a much larger working envelope from a single position: it can reach high overhead, out horizontally, and down below its own tracks. Combined with a 360° slewing turret, the machine can work a ceiling, a wall and a floor without moving.
Tool head
The end of the arm has a quick-change coupling. Attachments swap in minutes:
- Hydraulic breaker — the main tool for concrete, brick and refractory. Several times heavier than any hand-held breaker.
- Concrete crusher — crushes concrete between jaws instead of hammering it. Quiet, low vibration, cuts rebar as it goes.
- Steel shear — for cutting reinforcement, steel sections and pipes.
- Bucket and grapple — for moving rubble, lifting debris and clearing the work area.
- Drill and other specialist tools — for particular applications such as tunnelling and refractory.
Power
Most demolition robots are electric, running a hydraulic pump from a three-phase supply via a trailing lead. No engine means no exhaust, which is why they can work inside basements, occupied buildings, hospitals and vessels. Outdoors or where three-phase isn’t available, a generator sits outside the work area. Some models have diesel or battery options for fully mobile work.
Remote control
The operator carries a belt-mounted remote with two joysticks and a radio link with a range of hundreds of metres (our machines are rated to 300 m). The operator stands wherever the view is best and the risk is lowest: outside the exclusion zone, behind a barrier, on the far side of an opening.
Why a small machine hits so hard
An excavator’s weight is mostly cab, engine and counterweight, and its breaker is sized to what the boom can carry at reach. A demolition robot has no cab, no engine on board, and outriggers that plant it firmly, so almost all of its mass and hydraulic power go into the tool. The result is that a machine you can push through a doorway carries a breaker comparable to one on a 5-tonne excavator and hits with the same effect — a fact that surprises everyone the first time they see it.
What it can break
Reinforced concrete slabs, walls, columns and beams in the 150–600 mm range are everyday work, and mass concrete beyond that in stages. Refractory brick and castable in kilns and furnaces. Masonry, brick and stone. With the shear, steel sections and reinforcement. The limit is usually access and set-up rather than what the tool can do.

Anywhere with a doorway-sized route in and roughly a car-park bay to set up: basements, plant rooms, lift shafts and pits, stairwells, commercial floor plates, bridge decks and scaffold platforms, kilns and vessels, culverts and tunnels. Who operates it
A demolition robot is only as good as its operator. Running one well means reading the concrete, managing the exclusion zone, choosing the attachment, positioning the machine so the arm has the reach and the outriggers have the footing, and doing all of that while thinking about dust, noise and what’s behind the wall. That’s why we supply our machines wet-hired with our own ticketed operators rather than as dry hire.
